Frequently Asked Questions

This topic addresses common questions about the Application Discovery agent.

Why does the Application Discovery agent not have a 64-bit version, to remove the requirement for 32-bit runtime libraries on most modern systems?

The Application Discovery agent supports a wide range of platforms, including different operating systems and architectures. Compiling the agent to a 32-bit executable allows us to support both 32- and 64-bit operating systems with a single build. Additionally, on 64-bit operating systems, memory use is reduced.

How does the Application Discovery agent ensure that communication with the Application Discovery Service is secure?

All connections are outbound from the agent, with the agent enforcing secure communications using TLS (successor to SSL) with modern encryption libraries regardless of the host platform.

How does the automatic update process work, and is it secure?

All updates are initiated by the agent, using TLS to retrieve information about the latest available agent release from the Application Discovery agent repository hosted securely in S3. Before the agent installs any new package, it verifies that the package was published by Amazon and has a valid digital signature.
