AWS Enterprise Transformation Framework - AWS Prescriptive Guidance

AWS Enterprise Transformation Framework

The AWS Enterprise Transformation Framework is designed to develop executable and actionable strategies that drive top-line growth, increase profitability, and accelerate time to value as companies take advantage of digital products and services. The framework is industry-agnostic and globally relevant. It builds organizational momentum by holistically addressing the top barriers to cloud value success through proven diagnostics, assessments, accelerators, and experiential learning methods that are tailored to the enterprise's unique cloud journey and business objectives.

When the framework is applied through an integrated approach, it increases the pace and magnitude of business outcomes across four transformation capability pillars, as illustrated in the following diagram: business and strategy, FinOps, operations, and people and culture. Together, these pillars address common blockers to cloud adoption, such as unclear cloud business strategy and objectives, cultural clashes, disconnection between IT and business units, unclear financial strategies, and the effects of emerging technologies such as generative AI on people, processes, and technology.

Four pillars of the AWS Enterprise Transformation Framework.

The framework is applicable when digital transformation incites changes in financial operations, ways of working, operating model, business strategy, or culture (for example, migrations, data center exits, end-to-end transformation initiatives, or any technology implementation). Companies that have a highly tenured workforce, have long-standing, traditional ways of working, or are struggling to attract future generations of talent will greatly benefit from this framework. (Examples include contact centers, SaaS transformations, and generative AI.)

These capability pillars are deployed as four concurrent workstreams, with holistic engagement at the executive level, the enterprise level through a project management office (PMO) or transformation management office (TMO), and program levels. Applying the Enterprise Transformation Framework guides you on how to organize for accelerated outcomes and prioritize actions that support your business goals; decrease time to value by applying a programmatic change adoption framework; and set the foundation to transform your business with new, sustainable ways of working.

Business and strategy pillar

This pillar focuses on developing plans to achieve strategic outcomes and business value by using cloud. In this pillar:

  • Use methodologies that are designed to help you work back from your business objective, and define and refine your desired value proposition.

  • Decompose your value proposition into measurable business outcomes.

  • Define a target state and sharpen your strategy, business case, and roadmap to maximize enterprise value.

FinOps pillar

This pillar involves managing the financial aspects of cloud estate that align to corporate and IT financial reporting. In this pillar:

  • Define your common financial language, and develop an all-inclusive FinOps roadmap.

  • Conduct rapid consumption analysis, reduce waste spend and cost avoidance, and deploy technology for cost optimization.

  • Design and implement automated processes, budgeting, and forecasting, and establish unit economics-driven business process and reporting.

Operations pillar

This pillar is focused on evolving and maturing the cloud operating model and cloud operations, and developing operational resiliency. In this pillar:

  • Conduct maturity benchmarking and topology exercises for operational capabilities to match strategy to execution.

  • Build mechanisms to increase maturity in the right areas at the right time, and utilize mechanisms such as the AWS Cloud Operating Model (COM) Framework to develop your cloud operations strategy and roadmap.

  • Design a cloud operations playbook and advance maturity to service value-driven operating capabilities.

People and culture pillar

This pillar involves evolving organizational culture to support continuous learning, innovation, digital fluency, and adaptability. In this pillar:

  • Align and mobilize cross-functional IT and business leaders to drive changes in how their teams decide, behave, and innovate.

  • Develop new capabilities to develop cloud talent, rapidly innovate, enable faster product delivery, and speed up organizational adaptability by applying the AWS Organizational Change Acceleration (OCA) 6-Point Framework.

  • Scale the foundational transformation capabilities you need to make lasting changes.
