Percona XtraBackup - Amazon Aurora MySQL Migration Handbook

Percona XtraBackup

Compatible sources and limitations:

  • Self-managed MySQL 5.7 and 8.0 versions

  • You can’t restore into an existing RDS instance using this method

  • Amazon S3 limits the size of a file to 5 TB. If a backup exceeds 5 TB, then split the backup files into smaller files.

  • User accounts, functions, and stored procedures are not imported automatically.

For details, refer to Limitation and recommendations for importing backup files from Amazon S3 to Amazon RDS in the Amazon RDS User Guide.

Feature highlights:

  • Managed backup ingestion from Percona XtraBackup files stored in an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) bucket

  • Physical restore is more performant than logical restore

  • Can be used with binary log replication for near-zero migration downtime

For details, refer to Migrating Data from MySQL by using an Amazon S3 bucket in the Amazon Aurora User Guide.
