Release: Elastic Beanstalk Amazon Linux AMI platform updates on April 21, 2021

This release provides new versions for most AWS Elastic Beanstalk platforms based on Amazon Linux AMI. The release includes security updates. It also includes Multicontainer Docker, Go, Node.js, and Ruby updates, and some platform deprecation announcements.

Note

Be aware that at the time these release notes are published, the new platform versions might not yet be available in all the AWS Regions that Elastic Beanstalk supports. It might take a few hours for the release to complete.

2021-05-03 update: We missed announcing the deprecation of Node.js 10. It's now added to the Platform deprecation entry in the table.

Category Description

Security updates

Applied all security updates published in the Amazon Linux Security Center on or before April 7, 2021 to all released Amazon Linux AMI platforms.

The Node.js and Ruby releases are security releases. For more information, see Platform-specific updates in this table.

Platform deprecation

Today we're announcing that several platform branches will retire on April 30, 2022 due to end of support by the owners of their language runtime components. These platform branches are now deprecated. If you currently use any of these retiring platforms, we strongly recommend that you start planning your migration from each one of them to a current, fully supported version. For PHP specifically, this also includes migrating to Amazon Linux 2, because there are no remaining supported PHP branches based on Amazon Linux AMI.

The following platform branches are now deprecated:

  • Tomcat 7

  • Node.js 10

    Note

    In this case, we're not retiring an entire platform branch. The Node.js platform combines multiple Node.js 10 and 12 versions into a single platform branch. On retirement date, we will release a new platform version that will remove the ability to choose these Node.js 10 versions.

  • PHP 7.2 and 7.3

  • Ruby 2.4 and 2.5 (both Puma and Passenger variants)

Deprecated platform branches aren't listed on the Supported platforms page of the AWS Elastic Beanstalk Platforms guide. They are listed on a separate page, Retiring platform versions.

Multicontainer Docker

Updated the ECS agent to version 1.51.0.

Go

Updated Go to release 1.16.3. For details, see go1.16 in The Go Programming Language Release History.

Node.js

Updated the Node.js platform to add support for Node versions 12.22.1, 12.22.0, and 10.24.1.

Node.js versions 10.24.1 and 12.22.1 are security releases.

Ruby

Updated Ruby 2.6 to release 2.6.7.

Updated RubyGems to release 3.2.15.

The Ruby 2.6 and 2.5 updates are security releases.
