Using Amazon CloudWatch Alarms

You can create Amazon CloudWatch alarms on the Service Quotas console to notify you when you're close to a quota value threshold. Setting an alarm can help you know if you need to request a quota increase.

Creating a CloudWatch Alarm

You can create CloudWatch alarms to notify you when you're close to a self-defined percentage of the quota maximum.

To create a CloudWatch alarm for a quota

You can use the Service Quotas console to create a CloudWatch alarm to watch a service quota and notify you when the value reaches a defined metric. Once you create the alarm in the Service Quotas console, you must use the CloudWatch to create a notification for that alarm.

  1. Open the Service Quotas console.

  2. In the navigation pane, choose AWS services and then select a service.

  3. In the list of service quotas, select the quota that supports CloudWatch alarms.

If you have utilization, it appears beneath the quota description.

The CloudWatch alarms section appears at the bottom of the page.

  4. In the Amazon CloudWatch alarms section, choose Create to open the dialog for defining the alarm threshold.

  5. From the Alarm threshold menu, choose a threshold.

  6. In the Alarm name dialog, enter a name for the alarm.

The alarm name can't be blank and must be unique within the AWS account. Note that using CloudWatch can incur costs.

  7. Choose Create.

The new alarm appears in the list of CloudWatch alarms in your account. To add a notification to the CloudWatch alarm, see Creating a CloudWatch Alarm Based on a CloudWatch Metric.

To delete a CloudWatch alarm

This procedure assumes that you're deleting an alarm that you created using the Service Quotas console.

  1. Open the service quota that has a CloudWatch alarm.

  2. In the Amazon CloudWatch alarms dialog, select the alarm.

  3. Choose Delete.
